U.S. Shifts to ‘Recovery Mission’ for 4 Missing Soldiers in Lithuania

The search for four missing soldiers in Lithuania is no longer a rescue effort. U.S. officials now say it is a recovery mission. These soldiers disappeared during a training operation earlier this week, and things have taken a grim turn.

The troops vanished while trying to recover another vehicle during a maintenance mission. It happened early Tuesday morning, in a remote military training area surrounded by forests, wetlands, and thick mud. By Wednesday, their vehicle was found – an M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle – sunken in mud and water.

Day-and-Night Search Efforts Continue

U.S. and Lithuanian forces have not stopped working. They have been out in full force, using helicopters, search teams, and divers to comb the tough terrain. The soldiers’ last known location was muddy and unstable, making it hard to move quickly or safely.

Engineers Take the Lead

Military engineers are getting creative, building a kind of emergency work zone right in the middle of the swampy area. They are using pumps and dredging tools to clear out the mud so recovery teams can get inside the vehicle.

U.S. Major General Curtis Taylor says they are using every available resource. He points to the teamwork between American and Lithuanian crews, saying both sides are fully committed to bringing closure to the families.

The Lithuanian Defense Minister, Dovile Sakaliene, was the first to break the news about the shift in mission. The U.S. Army later confirmed her statement in a press release.

NATO and Trump Face Criticism

This tragic update comes just a day after a slip-up from NATO. Secretary General Mark Rutte mistakenly stated the soldiers were dead, before walking back his comment and saying the search was still active.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump caused a stir online when he said he had not been briefed on the situation. This led to criticism from many who felt the missing soldiers deserved more attention from national leaders.

Heavy Loss for Families and Forces

The incident has sparked strong emotions. Families are left waiting, hoping for answers. Fellow soldiers remain on-site, doing everything they can to recover their brothers-in-arms.
